FAQs
WHAT IS FRIENDS OF GREEN CENTRAL KNOLL?
Friends of Green Central Knoll is a volunteer-led neighborhood group dedicated to preserving, maintaining, and improving our park so that everyone in our community can benefit from this public space. We work closely with NYC Parks, Community Board 4, and local partners to support safety, stewardship, and collaborative improvements.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF GCK?
Green Central Knoll, located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, was established in 1997 on the former site of the historic Rheingold Brewery, reflecting the neighborhood’s transition from an industrial past to a more community-centered landscape. Rheingold Brewery
Over time, it has become an important green space in a densely populated area, offering much-needed recreation for children, families, the broader community, and their pets. Today, the park continues to evolve as a shared community resource, with ongoing efforts to ensure it is shaped by the needs and voices of those who use and care for it.
WHY IS GREEN CENTRAL KNOLL IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY?
Bushwick and the surrounding North Brooklyn neighborhoods have among the lowest amounts of park space per capita in New York City, making access to green space especially limited.
As a result, Green Central Knoll has become a vital and highly used resource—supporting sports, everyday recreation, dog walking, and play for children.
As demand has grown, competing uses have emerged. Tensions between organized sports and everyday community use have led to restricted access to parts of the park, including permit-only use of the field.
This has limited access for some residents, reduced opportunities for shared use, and highlighted the need for a more balanced and inclusive approach.
WHAT IS OUR VISION FOR GCK?
Our vision is for Green Central Knoll to function as a truly shared community space—one that reflects the needs of all who use it.
We believe the park can support both organized sports and everyday recreation through thoughtful planning, clear communication, and collaboration. This includes exploring ways to create safe, designated spaces while maintaining accessibility for children, families, and dog owners.
By working together with NYC Parks and the broader community, we aim to help shape a park that is used thoughtfully, playfully, and fairly by everyone.
HOW CAN GCK BETTER SERVE THE FULL COMMUNITY?
Green Central Knoll has long supported a variety of uses. As demand has increased, there is an opportunity to better structure how the space serves everyone.
One potential solution is the introduction of a thoughtfully designed dog run. Designated dog areas can create clear boundaries between uses, allowing for safe off-leash activity while supporting other forms of recreation.
By providing a dedicated space for dogs, a dog run can help reduce conflict, improve safety, and allow the field and surrounding areas to function more effectively for sports, families, and general use.
This approach creates an opportunity to better balance the park’s many uses—ensuring the space can be shared in a way that is inclusive, functional, and fair.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
If you’re interested in being part of this collaborative effort, we’d love for you to join us.
You can get involved by attending community meetings, participating in volunteer clean-ups, sharing your ideas, or simply staying informed as plans for the park continue to evolve.
Community involvement is essential to ensuring Green Central Knoll remains a space that reflects the needs and voices of those who care for it.
